Let's stick to the one version we test for during a release. Anything else is going to slow down bug fixing.

Also you have to make sure that all your mpmath patches are included upstream

Í do not think that that is a serious problem in the first place.
If it comes to the worst and the project is hijacked by somebody who makes incompatible changes, we can still fork.
