I downloaded latest OpenSSL 0.9.8d now, and it seems to work as expected. (it working here.) I uploaded my OpenSSL binaries to Synapse's web before a moment. You are using your server certificate/key? If not, then Synapse building ad-hoc self-signed certificate/key for each connection, what some clients not like! (because this ad-hoc certificate have same serial number as some previous different certificate, or because it is self-signed certificate, or because this certificate may have bad subject name, etc.) -- Lukas Gebauer.
