Dependencies shouldn't be too much of a problem - the mail protocols themselves would be buried in the backend (imap - imap plugin and so on). The front end should only be dependent on the usual Python server stuff and a patched wbxml (it won't need rapi2 or even libsynce). Although C/C++ is my more natural environment :) I hope to keep the push server as pure Python so it should be relatively straightforward to develop backends.
