I think the SAN code has some code for this, it is just not enabled in normal builds. See the WITHOUT_SAN_1_1 define. The reason for not enabling it were a) the additional dependencies and b) that the code wouldn't have compiled right away. I suggest you file an issue for this, with low priority. We only need a solution once talking to originators of such a SAN becomes relevant.
