I might misunderstand the question, but if you are referring to the
SyncML element <Cred> (with e.g. "syncml:auth-md5" type), then that
should definitely work. SyncML server asks for credentials of specific
and client sends them... Is there a problem?

If this relates to 0.8.1: Please note that in 2009 the SyncML library
underneath syncevolution was changed to libsynthesis and that changed a
lot details. My experience doesn't really go beyond that point --
Patrick may be able to provide more historical info later...
