What is the POV from the long-time sysadmins here about investing in certification at this particular point in time? I figure if I wait until this deal closes or whatever for some degree of certainty I end up potentially wasting time I could spend training etc, but I also figure however things turn out there would be enough Solaris shops around to keep smart people busy for years to come (vis a vis this possible/probable FUD I hear about Sun shops mass migrating to IBM etc etc).

It seems unlikely to me that the certification stuff will change quickly, at any rate, since new course materials &c would have to be created. So I don't think that's a reason to think about putting it off.

I think that certification as such is not that useful *in the job* for really experienced admins. I think that, if you get a good trainer (which most/all of them probably are), the courses can be very useful, especially to people who either are not that experienced, who do not spend the great majority of time on Solaris, or who are migrating to Solaris. I also think that the qualification may be very helpful getting you through agencies etc: if I was looking for a contract or job I would consider certification quite seriously.

Disclaimer: I'm married to a Solaris trainer, which may skew my opinions somewhat.
