Except that that ends up cluttering your logfiles with "mark" entries -
especially if you crank the interval down to something on the order of
the 10 seconds I mentioned. If there were something like mark that
didn't actually make a log entry, that would be almost what I asked
for; it certainly would be good enough to keep me happy in this
respect.
