I do get the impression that there's a lot of wishes and wants in either
direction when it comes to what should, or shouldnt be in a log. Or sent
down the wire, for that part. I still say negotiation is the only way to
go, with the option for the sending party to blatantly ignore it. The
recieving end could do the stripping of fields locally, if the sending one
does indeed ignore it.
There's a lot of discussion going on about ju^H^Hthings like how to
present time, etc - we got a -wide- array of equipment that should be able
to conform to all this. If the -sender- just sends the fields it can, and
the -reciver- tells the sender what it wants, most, if not all, equipment
would work, I'd think. Stuff without split second resolution (okay,
improbable, but what the heck. An example)? Send time field, dont send
split second field. Just dont -need- split second resolution? (128 Kb
wires overloaded as is, maybe?) Dont send it.
Rather than arguing whether something is good or not (and lets face it,
there's more than one opinion on just about everything), if support for
the 'optional' things could be a part of the protocol, it -would- make a
lot of people happy. Yes, you do get a minimal overhead as opposed to
having everything predefined. Yes, it does require a bit more complicated
logics. However, the client is supposedly the part that's likely to be on
embedded things.. and it doesnt make much sense running a log server that
cant cope with -really- simple parsing in the first place.
As an additional advantage, we wouldnt have to see any more 'does not
need', 'does too', 'does not', 'does too' threads on here.
Of course, I may be totally up the wrong damn tree. Someone tell me where
my line of thinking is fucked (preferrably in private mail if you feel
like using the same vocabulary as I just did), in case you think it is.
Please.
