This reminds me of way back when... 32 bits is plenty for IP space...

You just never know.  It's not like it's going to kill the protocol if
we add a few bits.  If we're talking #'s, 256 seems like a ridiculously
large #, and almost safe.

I know, I know, a few bits here, a few bits there, pretty soon you're
talking real... but I think even adding some 10 or 20% of padding to 
the final log entry length for various overkills to give it added 
industrial strength seems prudent.  Consider how much has changed since
syslog came out - if this one lasts as long I'd be happy.
