To keep the discussion going, I've submitted ver-01 of the syslog ID.
I'm not real happy with section 3 (Packet Format and Contents) so I'll
be looking at making some changes there. I did try to make some
explicit definitions there so I've resorted to ABNF characterization.
I've also added a lot to section 4 (Conventions) as Petter suggested.
I may have gone too far in some of the subsections so I'll be glad to
take input on that. Take a look at Table 1 (syslog Message Facilities)
as I've added some notes to that and filled in the rest of the
facilities.
I've just submitted this to the internet-drafts editors so it may take
a day or two for it to be available. I've asked that the announcement
go to this mailing list as well as to the ietf-announce list. Please
look over this version and send in your comments to the group.
