Hmmmmm... Does anyone know what files WriteNow handles? Any opinions on comparing the old MS WORD to WriteNow on System 6??
I remember WriteNow from back in the day, but only ever used it myself a handful of times. I usually used Word 4.0, and recall being mightily upset at all the changes in Word 5.1. And as we all know it just went downhill from there.
WriteNow was very fast, and the reason was that it was written in 680x0 assembly code. This was also the reason why they had trouble providing updates, because assembly coding is more difficult than high-level programming. It also explains why there was no hope whatsoever of there ever being a PowerPC version, because that would have been a complete rewrite of everything from scratch. It might also explain any difficulties you may experience attempting to use WriteNow in Classic under OS X -- it may not emulate a 68K processor, as the old Power Macs once did.
