I'm just experimenting with Red Hat 8.0 Linux, on an old dual 200MHz Pentium Pro machine (aka "TheRack"). I don't really know what I'm doing but I did find something about turning on AppleTalk. I did. Now from my OS 6.0.8 Mac IIci (ethernet) I can see that machine in the chooser (Appleshare 3.5) and share files. I could also do the same with a G3 upgraded PPC 6100 running OS 9.1. But although I can "see" it, I cannot connect with my recently upgraded PowerBook G4 12" running 10.3.5. (incompatible afp message).
Doesn't that strike you as odd? Is a linux server going to be the heart of my network?
A linux server the heart of your network? That doesn't sound odd. It has been done before. About a million+ times. What really is odd is that OS X cannot access a file server over appletalk. I mean, that is something you can even do with windows after installing "appleshare client for windows" software. Please...
