Is the network control panel set to ethernet? I ask this because I think this control panel operates independent from MacTCP and deals with the appletalk part of your network.

Any postscript printer should be visible in the chooser. Is this 4+ a postscript printer? I remember the 4p had postscript support built in. Don't know about the 4+
You should not need any extra hp drivers for a postscript printer. The laserwriter 7.0 driver (part of system 6.08) should be able to print to any postscript printer over appletalk.

Bob,

I think you need a driver from HP. On their web site they have drivers for your printer at:

But the oldest Mac OS they list having drivers for is OS 8.

Perhaps Apple has something more System 6 specific in their support archives.

I have been using system 6 for a while, but have never really set up
networked printers in it before.

I now have my mac plus on my home ethernet network. On this network
is an HP laserjet 4+ with jet direct card. I have been attempting for
a while to get my mac plus configured to use the printer. So far, I
have activated Ethertalk on the mac, and gotten it to communicate on
my tcp/ip network. TCP/IP stuff all works.

On the printer, I turned on its ethertalk interface. Then on the
macintosh I opened the choose, and looke for it in the "laser writer"
section. That's the closest match on my chooser. It wasn't there. I
tried the other printer drivers. The drivers I have are the ones that
come with system 6.0.8. Is there an HP specific driver I need to get?
If so, where can I get it? Did I miss a step somewhere?

Any advice would be most appreciated. Right now all I can do to print
is print as a postscript file, and ftp the file to my linux machine
and print from there. I'd really like to get the mac talking directly
to the printer!

Thanks,
-Bob

PS This is a great list, this is my first post, and I'm glad to be here!
