If the drive is an internal Apple one it should read and write 800K disks. The G3s that cannot write to 800K disks are the ones that use external USB drives (which can interestingly read 720K PC disks but not the 800K Mac kind).
If you are having problems with 800K disks on your G3 (it shouldn't happen but if there's some quirk in that particular Mac that prevents it) put the files on a floppy and transfer them to the IIci. The IIci can read 800K disks with its drive and you can transfer the files to the Plus from there. Try an 800K that you know is good in the G3...it probably will work.
