JFTR: Debian stable ships coreutils 8.13, which has been released 08-Sep-2011. So yes, this version is a bit dated and it's unfortunate that this complicates providing backports for newer systemd versions or doing crossbuilds. Umut, you could try to poke the coreutils maintainer to provide a backport of coreutils 8.21, which is currently in jessie.
