Ryun did live in Southern California, in Santa Barbara, from 1971-72. I
can still remember a friend of mine, who was California born and bred,
coming back from a run in early '72 with a smirk on his face. He had been
wearing only shorts and shoes and passed Jim, who was bundled up in a
sweatsuit against the chill on-shore breeze. He quoted Jim's famous
comment about the harsh Kansas winters making one tougher, then did a
skinny distance runner's version of the flex pose.
