That's not really the point. I am not necessarily opposed to the policy,
because I know that it partially stems from the athletes themselves
(although as we have pointed out, the AAC does not always seem to represent
the athletes the way a lot of them would like). But if two or three stars
are missing from the meet, especially if they are there to sign autographs
and do PR, then it shouldn't be a problem for a healthy sport.
What needs to happen is for nationals to be such an attractive meet, that
everyone participates. I believe that the relatively small amount of prize
money this year was a good first step. I also wonder about the idea of
having the meet during July, as has been suggested before, during the break
in the European season. Would the athletes want that? It would make
selecting teams for Worlds more difficult..
