It's not T-Mobile that is actually sending a "tape reel" to every phone.
They are simply sending a specially formatted text message which turns
on/off the MWI. Most people refer to it as a reel because I think most
handsets use something like that. I would assume that Siemens or Samsung
might use something different. The indicators are built into the phone and
it is not something that T-Mobile can make show up on all handsets as a
standard. Most modern day handsets have some sort of built in message
waiting indicator that can be displayed if the carrier supports it.
T-mobile never has until now.

I guess I have just gotten used to the reel since I own Nokias. I don't
care what the "icon" is really. Just as long as I can look at the phone and
tell if it is a voicemail or text message without having to drill down into
my inbox.

Huh, cause this is my first Nokia phone. All my other phones have
used the standard envelope icon to indicate new voice mail. Of
course, my older phones didn't have text capabilities.

Care to explain? Using a tape reel as a metaphor for data storage is
as equally amusing as when they do it on Star Trek: TOS.
