To my knowledge, you can't have GPRS active while you are on the phone. Once you make or receive a call, the phone connects to the regular phone network (GPRS is used for data). If you want to be connected to GPRS when you aren't actually talking to someone, I'm not sure all phones have that capability, but you might want to look in the manual for your phone. I have a Treo 600 and have GPRS always connected, but it disconnects when I make or pick up a call...

I have just come across an article regarding T-Mobile phones potentially getting better receiption if the GPRS is always on. I have it "On" in my messaging menu, but I don't see an option to make it be "On" during normal phone use. I have a V600, I do have GPRS services activated (T-Mo Internet), and it activates fine during Internet use. Can someone point me in the right direction? I have been having nothing but problems whenever I roam out of my home area, even tho T-Mo-CS indicates that it is something "I am doing" because I am firmly in their coverage area, where I have indicated problems. I have taken it into a T-Mobile store where I travel and have no signal, and they put their SIM in my phone.. full signal , I put my SIM in their phone, no signal. I have received 2 new SIMS from them, and nothing resolves the problem; therefore I thought I would try this solution. If you can help, thanks in advance.
