If T-Mobile won't allow you to put your account on hold for more than six months the only thing I guess you could do is to move to the absolute lowest price plan ($20/month) But my thoughts are that if you're going to be gone for that length of time you'd just let your T-Mobile account expire as you'd be using a prepaid account in the foreign country you're in. T-Mobile US is different than T-Mobile elsewhere such as in the UK or in the Netherlands.
