Well, you could just put it on hold for 3 months or drop down to the
lowest rate plan. You don't mention several important things:
1. Where are you going? If you have a multi-band phone and are going
to a GSM country, you might want to make sure to get it unlocked. I
understand that foreign T-Mobile SIMs work in recent US T-Mo phones
but you don't want to limit yourself to one choice of carrier.
2. Are you under contract? T-Mobile will probably let you go if you
move out of the country.
3. Do you have any important grandfathered features on your plan that
you would really like to keep? Do you feel like you have to keep your
current phone number?
I'd suggest that you first call T-Mobile and ask them for the unlock
code for your phone, if you have not already done this. After you get
it unlocked, call them back and tell them you are moving overseas and
want to know your options. If your answers to #3 are "no", you should
probably just close your account and reopen one when you move back.
