I've been very disappointed with my 8120. I consider it a type of beta
device. The GSM coverage is significantly worse than the 8100. The 8120 is
painfully slower, far more difficult to scroll (the Pearl itself isn't
nearly as smooth and makes a lot of noise), I experience profound memory
leaks (dumped call logs and messages sometimes multiple times per day), and
the UMA seems more like an experiment than a solid feature. When it doesn't
drop calls, sometimes the call quality over WiFi is horribly choppy, like an
analog call, but it refuses to handover to GSM for solid reception. And yet
sometimes it's also perfect. If this were my first BB, I would've returned
it immediately. I have a neighbor who bought the 8820 around the same time
I switched to the 8120 and also has found UMA to be largely an unavailable
feature. I was at a TMO HotSpot earlier today and although it connected,
there was no UMA. At home, my 8120 usually prefers to connect to a
neighbor's Apple Airport rather than my TMO/Linksys router. It loves to
randomly change wireless networks and often seems to prefer selecting ones
from further away.
