We do not usually update to -rc versions, I updated to the new stable release 
though.

Usually it is quite clear from the log what is wrong. Was the log among the 
many emails in this thread?

No, I installed the minimal and emerged X and the other small X stuff I needed 
(blackbox, rxvt-unicdoe, xemacs, etc.).

I can imagine some new small reps are not yet in the minimal-xorg pkgsel.
E.g. I updated the xorg-server.cache recently for a new dep, maybe that was 
epoxy.

Just look in the .err log. Usually there is some dependency missing, or header 
not found. Whatever, ...

How do you like git then? I find subversion pretty easy.
I only have a hate relationship with git, which usually increases my blood 
pressure, ...
