For a very rough estimate, if I'm using a new type of thread, I will wrap 
the thread closely around a piece of card for the number of tablets. Its by 
no means accurate, but can give a bit of an idea. I also try to remember to 
write down every type of thread I use and the number of tablets with each 
project, it is then easier to estimate on the next project by going through 
these notes. But, if I need to be sure, weaving a sample piece is the best way.
