Wyverns are two-legged dragons.  They really outnumber the four-legged 
dragons in medieval art, from what I've been seeing.  When we normally think 
of dragons, it is the four-legged variety which apparently came from the 
East.  I believe the wyvern is derived from the snake/serpent/worm of 
Anglo-Saxon, and earlier, beliefs.
