Reeled silk. Silk was reeled from several cocoons at the same time to
make a yarn of usable size; the natural gum in the double filaments held
them together.
Thrown silk. Throwing was either adding twist to the reeled silk, or
combining several elements together and twisting these to make a thicker
yarn. Various types, singles, tram, organzine.
Spun silk. The short silk threads left after reeling or on damaged
cocoons were cut into 9 inch lengths, combed and then spun as a normal
short fibre.
