Is linen suitable for tablet-weaving?

Writing about tablet-weaving in "Byways in Handweaving", Mary Atwater
says that "Linens and the hard-twisted crochet cottons do not give
good results." Luther Hooper in "Weaving with Small Appliances"
states that "Linen thread is the least suitable of all for tablet
warps because of its harsh and uneven nature."

I have seen one of Peter Collingwood's linen tablet-woven belts and I
find the above statements to be very misleading. Can anyone explain
the aesthetic that caused these two weavers to reject linen for
tablet-weaving?
