 all, what language is it?  My guess is Old Germman. (Althochdeutsch,
 Mittelhochdeutsch, Plattdeutsch?) Is it related to such words as "Spalte" and
 "gespalten" which could describe the reed.

Gudrun, I can not claim any credit for knowing what the word means!  Ute 
Bargmann translated it while translating the 1517 German of the modelbuch for 
weaving gold brocaded bands.  It was handwritten by a Sister Anna Neuperin in 
the St. Clare Cloister in Nurnberg.  So the word is at least 16th century in 
origin.  Actually, just in context it could be figured out.
