Were these using threaded-in patterns (each card wit a different
arrangement of colours and then a very simple turning pattern)?

I'm a great advocate of beginners learning to use the continuous ("10
minute") warp with all the cards being threaded with 2 adjacent dark
threads and 2 light ones (except perhaps for one or two border cards
each side). With that set up, there is a near infinite range of
patterns available - very simple geometric designs like stripes and
checkerboards and chevrons, a wide range of designs including lettering
and pictorial designs with the double faced double weave technique, and
wonderfully intricate knotwork patterns developed from the "Egyptian
diagonals" technique.

Linda Hendrickson's booklet "Tablet Weaving for Parents and Children is
one cheap source of instructions for the 10-minute warp and the simple
geometric patterns, and her "Double Faced Tablet Weaving: 50 Designs
from around the world" explains that technique and shows what a wide
range of pictorial designs can be woven.

Candace Crockett's book "Card Weaving" covers the '2 dark, 2 light'
techniques in Chapter 6, though she doesn't show their potential as well
as I would like. She does cover threaded-in techniques too, and has a
lot of suggestions for finishing - like how to sew strips together for
bags, add fringes and tassels and so on.

Of course, Peter Collingwood's "Techniques of Tablet Weaving" is THE
book for anyone who wants to study tablet weaving in depth.
