Nancy, tablet-woven bands are part of traditional dress in Bhutan. You
might be interested in the article "Tablet Weaving in Bhutan" by Claire
Thomas, which appeared in the British magazine "Journal for Weavers,
Spinners, & Dyers", September 1993, pages 14-17.

This article provides a good overview including tools, warping process,
traditional designs, etc. The author mentions warp twining, double-faced
weaves, and brocade. She says there is a significant amount of tablet
weaving in Bhutan --that is, people actually doing tablet weaving as of
1993. She says, "I found tablet weaving used for bag straps, ties for
prayer 'books' (collection of loose sheets, wrapped in cloth, which must be
tied up), and thin band used as laces for knee-length yak boots."

I don't know how to contact the author of the article... but maybe one of
our British members would know.

One of the members of the Portland Handweavers Guild went to Bhutan a few
years ago to study brocade, and gave me several photos of tablet weavers at
work, and close-ups of the bands. They are warp-twined with brocade.
