Hi Asta:

I just finished pattern draft 1 in chapter 5... it was fun to do, though warping it
was a mess. I first started trying to warp continuously on the inkle loom & then
decided that was not going to work...at that point, I decided to just pre-measure the
warp & thread the cards & THEN tie the warp onto the loom. I then decided I only
wanted to do a short band & couldn't figure out a circular warp path that included the
tensioner so I tied one end of the warp onto one peg & the other onto the tensioner...
that worked "o-kay", but I think in the future, I'll stick with circular warps (even
if I have to pre-measure the warp strands), they're MUCH easier to handle when tied
circularly.

I also decided to turn the selvedge cards in the same direction, and that caused the
twist built up much faster in those cards, so when I do another warp like that, if I
do the edge cards in one direction, I'll make sure I use a knot (like a slip knot)
that's reasonably easy to untie so that I can comb the twist out..
when I did my first piece (sample band A of the Crockett book), I didn't have trouble
with twist build up (I warped continuously & circularly) and I think it was because I
did balanced card turning with that warp..

I think the next pattern I'm going to do will be the ram's horn in the single width
since it'll be my first time doing a pattern that includes more moving of the cards in
different directions...it'll be interesting to see how well I keep up... I'm thinking
of setting up some kind of bead system on the loom to help me keep track, especially
since with the baby in the house, I may have to put the loom down at any given second,
possibly without making a mental note of where I am... I just may be able to figure it
out by looking at the work to see what needs to be done next...

Where can I find Guntram's Blue Eternity? I like the idea of a pattern coming in
different widths... I may decide to do a wider version of Ram's Horn once I do it as
shown in the Crockett book...

>As for patterns, I think that the ram's horn and also Guntram's Blue
>Eternity are really fun. The Blue Eternity pattern comes in several
>different widths so if you want to use more cards you can.

Hallie:

I may someday try your suggestion to soak fuzzy yarn in a starch solution... what
proportions would you suggest & how would you set up the wool yarn in preparation for
a starch soak? Perhaps wind it on a plastic niddy noddy?

>Asta
>Dear Asta,
> You can work with evrn a very fuzzy yarn it you soak it it in starch
>solutoin and let it dry before warping ! makes it as easy to use as cotton
>and washes out easily after weaving.

Nancy:

I don't know if I'll do much TW with wool, but it's sure something I'll want to try at
least one time! I had some stuff in storage & one of my boxes of yarn got wet on the
bottom... although I was upset about it, I found it interesting to see how the yarns
reacted to the contact with the wetness & ground...the wool basically disintegrated in
different places especially the parts that had the most contact with the ground... the
acrylic (there was an acrylic knitted blanket in there) was just dirty & a run through
the washer & dryer took care of that & it looked good... I don't think there was any
cotton yarn in the box, just wool & acrylic yarn... it was interesting to see that...
but I'm not giving up wool or glorifying acrylic! <grin>

I would love to be a fly on the wall in a few hundred years or so to see what happens
to that acrylic blanket...

>Jessica, I think it would depend on whether you used it full-strength at
>3-ply or not. I personally prefer to stay away from wool for TW, but you
>might want to try it just to see how it feels/works/looks. Some of the very
>earliest brocaded TW bands are missing their warp, and it is probable that it
>was a very fine wool thread which has since disappeared.
