Sponsored by TWIST - Tablet Weavers International Studies & Techniques

I have woven several wide pieces, up to 30" and I have had friends
who have woven rugs with tablets. I have done 2-hole, 3-hole and
4-hole tablet weaving this wide. I do work with Swedish "cowhair"
and rya yarn -- not fine threads -- this wide. But the size of yarn
does not influence the number of tablets you can use. That is up
to the weaver. You obviously must have extra patience for this.
Gone are the days of warping and weaving a belt in 3 hours.

Just to add a little practical info to the query about weaving wide with
tablets: I have found it helpful to have something to support the pack(s)
of cards. For my first wide weaving, I had the setup on a table, so that
the table surface supported the tablets. On another I actually sat on the
floor, with the warp mounted on a tapestry frame which lay on the floor.
My last one was warped on my floor loom, with the heddles moved aside and
reed removed. I laid a plank across the side beams for the tablets to
rest upon. These setups all worked well.

Also, I used a backstrap sword for beating and also to remain in the
shed when not weaving, just to make sure the tablets did not tilt
and get into the wrong position. I think I may have also used it
to moved the full row of tablets to get them all lined up before
turning the groups of tablets by hand.

If you can get hold of some back issues of TWIST, you will find
some articles on wide tabletweaving. And perhaps there are some
in the TWIST galleries online.
