Um, I know the history. It was a soccer player who came up with soccer, not an opponent. It may have taken on different associations later, though. I don't live in the UK, so I don't know the popular feeling there. Outside of the UK, however, the biggest problem with soccer is some people don't know what it means, and I'm afraid assocation_football would be even worse (though I could be wrong) I agree with your other point, though. I don't think any sport should use just football - it's way to confusing. Or, alternatively, all of them should.
