Very interesting. I didn't like the "historic" in historic=wayside_cross,
and not too much the "wayside".

Most wayside crosses here in Austria do have a historic background (e.g. someone died at that place, or someone was saved with the help of God), but still that doesn't cover everything that is a cross...

But, is it possible to have something more generic across the religions like
man_made=(something saying it is a small religious monument)
(something saying it is a small religious
monument)=cross|virgin_statue|statue_of
saint|chörten|sacred_stone|station_of_the_cross...
where religion=* (and denomination) could be applied.

Summit crosses derive from religious symbols, but are mostly considered just peak symbols these days. There are also other types of summit symbols, e.g. cairns, prayer flags, even a carabiner of size of 1 m. That's why I originally intended to write a proposal for something like summit_symbol=*. I rejected the idea because all of them can be found elsewhere too. E.g. cairns are often used to mark hardly visible trails and branches.

So I think that we should distinguish the physical properties of an object from its use. Physically, a cross is a cross. The use may be as a landmark, a place of worship, or whatever. We can combine man_made=cross with some tag(s) describing its use.

As to the values you listed:

I would take virgin statues as a subset of statue_of_saint, which can be tagged as tourism=artwork + artwork_type=sculpture together with religion=christian and probably amenity=worship. There is, however, no clear line between statues and wayside_shrines. Most wayside shrines contain paintings and/or small statues. Some shrines have a statue on top. Some do not even have a niche, but only a statue on top.

Chörtens seem to me like chapels, just with another religion:
amenity=place_of_worship + building=chörten + religion=buddhist + denomination=tibetan

I really would appreciate some standard how to map stations of the cross. There should probably be some route relation with the way and the stations as members. -> An issue for a separate proposal.
