Thanks for the two fast replies. n answer to my first question you both suggest to map a bicycle lane (which is separated from the main carriageway only by a white painted line) as a separate way. To me this seems not correct. We apply always the rule to map as separate ways only ways that are separated by some kind of physical separator (even though I do not know where that is explicitly stated in the wiki). So I would not follow that approach. The only other alternative that springs to mind is the use of the lanes model (see the example in http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Lanes)
