What do you mean by "scramble your HTML code and introduce all sort of odd behavior"? I didn't see any of that. *confused* .. plus it had a built-in option to remove those extra white space (something that someone was asking about on this list a week back for JSP taglibs). Maybe you're talking about their IDE (Studio or Homesite) - i don't think i've come across a decent IDE that wouldn't mess-up (add redundant tags etc) your code when you switch between design-mode and text-mode.
Toy websites? ;) A quick look around on the web would reveal a number of high-end sites using CF. Hey, don't get me wrong - i'm all for J2EE platforms. All i'm saying is that for web application development, CF is something to consider.
