Folks: The startup that I work for, http://simplegeo.com, is fast approaching launch (scheduled for April 1). Exciting! But this means that I am very busy. Would all students who are interested in Google Summer of Code please write to all of the Mentors -- Jack Lloyd, David-Sarah Hopwood, Brian Warner, and myself, in addition to carbon-copying the backup administrator, Peter Secor. So far we have two students who have expressed interest in GSoC, and both of them are most interested in the Redundant Array of Independent Clouds project.
That's a good project, but I feel like it needs more detail and clarity to let you know if you are succeeding at implementing it. Kevan Carstensen wrote a private email to me containing a lot more detail about RAIC a few weeks ago, but at the moment I can't find that email. I've been intending to write up Medium Sized Distributed Mutable Files (#393) as a GSoC project. It would be a very valuable improvement -- opening up a number of new use cases -- and the amount of work required is probably just right for a summer, and the scope of the work is clearly delineated and measurable. But, I haven't gotten a chance to write it up on the GSoCIdeas page. If anyone else (including students!) want to edit the wiki and write up #393 please feel free.
