I can't speak for anyone else, but I joined VolunteerGrid2 because I wanted to back up my files and because donating some of my extra storage space to other like-minded individuals was more palatable than paying a monthly fee to a storage company.


Of course, there are other scenarios besides volunteer hosted distributed file systems - enterprise-wide, university-wide (e.g., AFS), community-wide, project-wide, illicit activities (e.g., the early Napster), and probably quite a bit more.
