Humm,
is it  the same USB key tried on different laptops + VMs ?

Have you tried to format a new time the USB key, then reinstall a fresh
Tails ? (may be corrupt install ?)
About wifi... have you tried your Tails with wired connection ? (may be
a wifi driver problem ? "ifconfig" test is ok ?)

As Intregeri says about bridges, may be your other Tor Browsers on other
OS are using bridges to connect to Tor network ? So try to use bridges
with Tails too.
