You can just click slightly inside the area you want to select and it chooses the right one. e.g. On the coast where an area of natural=wood borders an area of natural=beach which joins the coast. In Potlatch it is hard to differentiate between the wood, beach and coastline, but in JOSM this is easier. - Ben.
