It's also a little unnecessary as the current renderer does a reasonable job of making the place names appear and then disappear as you zoom in.

The place where most people want to go gets a little fuzzy the bigger the settlement gets. Just for a laugh I asked for directions to "Sydney":

Google guides to to right outside the MLC Centre in King St.
Bing takes you to the George St end of the Strand Arcade.
OSMAnd tells me to drive north over the Harbour Bridge, do a u-turn and then stop half way across on the return journey. Whereis is smart enough to know not to give you directions unless you know whereabouts in Sydney you want to go.

That looks like mapping for the renderer. imho, the node should be
placed near the location where you want to be guided to when you
specify the hamlet without street name in a navigation system. i.e.
not only you, but "most" people.
