I think it's a style question. I just took a random sample of 50
roundabouts in city and the number of roundabouts with islands, single
lane roads, and has the flares split are:
Sydney 15%
Brisbane 20%
Adelaide 30%
Melbourne 60%
Canberra 80%
To summarise: Melbourne, love 'em; Sydney, no thanks; Canberra, the
job's not done till the paper work is finished.
