This page https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216918877-Strava-Metro-and-the-Global-Heatmap says that "The Global Heatmap shows 'heat' made by aggregated, public activities *over the last year.*"
So it's possible there were routes showing when the original mapper mapped this but they've expired now.
