With QGIS, I once found this question on gis.stackexchange: https://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/100205/error-with-existing-osm-qgis-style. it refers to 2 projects giving qml styles for OSM data using geofabrik shp for the first one and a spatialite database for the second one.
