In the US, Kindergarden refers to what amounts to a 0 grade in elementary school, so the pupils are 5 or 6 years old. As a preparatory year, it used to be optional in some areas, but, I believe, is now mandatory in most areas. Often, it lasts only half a day, five days a week, or just several days a week. and it lasts only for one year, just as a normal grade in school. In AE, if you want to speak of the German concept of Kindergarten, separate from Grundschule, etc., "nursery school" may be the best bet.
