Obviously loads of OSMers have been making the point about the value of a
release of OS data for ages.
I made exactly that point in my presentation entitled "Crowdsourcing is
radically changing the geodata landsacpe" at the International Cartographic
Association ICC2009 conference in Santiago yesterday. Am now being seen by some
folk at teh conference (who don't necessarily know the full story) as some kind
of seer!
Have just heard Vanessa Lawrence give the morning keynote here, which had to be
extended to allow her to comment on the announcement. A very cautious statement
(no surprise there) to the effect it was govt proposal not theirs, that they
had not time to digest, that they were confident of the future of OS, that they
have concerns for the future of their business partners, and that it was only
really because of the excellence of the OS geodata. Agree with the excellence,
but not with it being the ONLY reason. Social and economic cahnge is more to
the point. Concern that I immediately have is for the maintainance of the data
that comes in to the category of released data - with it have low priority or
be phased out to none?
Bizarely, the info was released (via twitter according to Vanessa) at exactly
the time of session I was in. Slightly different timing and I could have
dropped the bomb!

Cheers
STEVE
