The map that Frederik linked to shows three different types of route (here in london, there's the Thames Path, Capital Ring and Jubilee Walk as an example of each type). Also, the usage of the different classes of walking route are already documented on the wiki, at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_United_Kingdom_Long_Distance_Paths The nwn / rwn / lwn tags bear more than a passing resemblance to the ncn / rcn / lcn tags!
