This week I've seen something that gives near-Mapnik quality rendering with, hopefully, near-trivial installation, configuration and system demands. I think one comment on IRC was "zomg" which succinctly sums it up. I won't post the details here yet as hopefully the authors will be announcing something soon, but I'd just say that if you're a n00b at map rendering, you might want to hold off on learning Mapnik for now.
