I'd imagine that the API has to accept pretty much anything as it has to deal with many languages and many character sets.
Try drawing something (anything) in http://shapecatcher.com/ - if you ignore the miscelleous symbols (like, er, U+1F4A9) it'll probably match something in half a dozen alphabets you've never heard of.
