I also live in London, east of the River Lea (historical Essex). It certainly makes a difference for the purposes of athletics: my running club is the other side of the Lea and affiliated to Middlesex, but I am ineligible to compete in Middlesex County AA races. I suspect people participating in other sports at club level are affected by historic counties.
